Well, I'll bet that most of you looking at this page are very familiar with the first two photos above depicting a screen shot from the original Crazy Climber arcade game that made it to this US. But how many of you are familiar with the last two pictures? These are from Crazy Climber 2, the sequel to the original Crazy Climber arcade game that was never released in the US. Very rare indeed.
Crazy Climber Facts:
The game was originally manufactured by Nihon Bussan Co. Ltd in 1980 and released by Nichibutsu originally and then in the United States by Taito.
It as released in a few different cabinet styles including the full upright, the mini upright, the Cocktail Table (which is in my collection) among others.
The object of the game was to control your Climber, whom you observed from a backview perspective, and have him climb tall buildings, reach the top, get rescued by a helicopter, and then on to another taller and more difficult building to scale again. Not so easy since while climbing the buildings, your climber had to avoid bird droppings, flower pots, cans, bottles, flying birds, closing windows and King Kong himself, all of which were desperately trying to knock him off the building (when you heard the infamous, "oh no!") A blast to play but difficult to master in its day and still my all time favorite arcade game even today some 20+ years later.
Overall cool gameplay, satisfying graphics, neat sounds and super addictive (Move over Pacman!).
Crazy Climber 2 Facts:
This game was manufactured by in 1988 by Nichibutsu for non-US countries. I believe it was only released in Japan and in very limited quantities.
Similar to the original version but with enhanced graphics and more buildings for your Climber to Climb and conquer.
Once again you would guide your climber up the sides of tall buildings while now avoiding closing windows, more falling objects, cranes, flying birds, flying laundry, King Kong again but now stronger! Reach the top of the building once again and then catch a ride on a helicopter which would bring you over to the next more difficult building to climb, reach the top and so forth. One super cool game feature was that your climber was able to kiss the girls as they leaned out of their windows for bonus points. Talk about a double treat (o:
